Step-by-Step: Cleaning the Metal Body

Step 1: Wipe down with a dry cloth

Start with a dry microfibre cloth. Wipe the entire surface of the tool in long, smooth strokes. This removes loose debris, dust, and light fingerprints without introducing any liquid.

Step 2: Apply isopropyl alcohol if needed

Dampen (don't soak) a corner of your cloth with IPA. Wipe down the metal surface, paying attention to grooves, edges, and textured areas where oils collect. IPA evaporates quickly and leaves no residue.

Step 3: Use a cotton swab for detail areas

Dip a cotton swab in IPA and gently work it into any engraved details, knurling, or tight corners. Rotate and replace the swab as it picks up residue.

Step 4: Dry thoroughly

Although IPA evaporates quickly, give the tool a final wipe with a dry cloth before reassembling or using.

Frequency: For daily-use tools, a quick wipe with a dry cloth every few days is ideal. A full IPA clean every 2–4 weeks keeps surfaces looking new.

Material-Specific Notes

Stainless Steel:

The most forgiving material — resistant to most cleaning agents and slow to show wear. Regular IPA wipes are all you need.

Brass:

Brass develops a natural patina over time — a warm, darkening of the surface that many collectors treasure. If you want to preserve the patina, stick to a dry cloth only. If you prefer the original bright gold finish, use IPA or a dedicated brass polish (Brasso or similar) and buff with a clean cloth.

Copper:

Like brass, copper develops a distinctive patina — shifting from bright reddish-orange toward darker brown tones. Treat as brass: preserve naturally or polish back with a dedicated copper cleaner.

Titanium:

Virtually maintenance-free. Titanium doesn't tarnish, corrode, or stain under normal use. A dry wipe is almost always sufficient. For deep cleaning, IPA is safe.

Step-by-Step: Degreasing a Bearing

Step 1: Remove the bearing from the spinner

Most quality spinners allow bearing removal. Use the appropriate tool (usually a small flathead screwdriver or a bearing pin) to press the bearing out. Handle it carefully — some bearings are ceramic and can chip if dropped.

Step 2: Remove the bearing shields (if applicable)

Many bearings have removable metal shields on each side. Carefully pry them off using a pin or the tip of a small screwdriver. This isn't always necessary, but it allows for deeper cleaning.

Step 3: Soak in isopropyl alcohol

Place the bearing in a small container and cover with 99% IPA. Let it soak for 3–5 minutes, agitating occasionally by swirling or gently shaking the container.

Step 4: Rinse and repeat

Pour off the IPA — you'll likely see it has turned cloudy or yellowish from accumulated oils. Refill with fresh IPA and repeat the soak. Continue until the IPA remains clear after soaking.

Step 5: Dry the bearing

Shake excess IPA from the bearing and place it on a clean cloth. Spin it occasionally with a cotton swab or a light puff of compressed air to help it dry completely. Do not reinstall until it is fully dry — typically 10–20 minutes at room temperature.

Step 6: Re-lubricate

Once dry, add a tiny amount of thin bearing lubricant (see below). One small drop applied to the inner race, or a single touch of the lubricant pin to the ball channel, is sufficient. Spin the bearing by hand to distribute the lubricant.

Step 7: Reinstall

Press the bearing back into the spinner body (and replace shields if removed). Your spinner should spin significantly faster and quieter than before.

Lubricant Guide

Thin bearing oil (Bones Speed Cream, Blunt One Drop, or similar):

Ideal for most fidget spinners. A tiny amount dramatically extends bearing life while maintaining speed.

Dry lubricant (PTFE-based):

Good for ultra-clean environments or ceramic bearings. Provides lubrication with near-zero residue.

What NOT to use:

  • WD-40: It's a solvent and de-lubricant, not a lubricant. It will temporarily improve spin then rapidly degrade the bearing.
  • Cooking oils: They gum up, attract dust, and cause the bearing to seize.
  • Heavy oils (motor oil, machine oil): Too viscous — will dramatically slow the bearing.
  • Water: Never introduce water to a bearing. Even in a humid environment, water causes rust on steel bearings and is difficult to fully remove.

Keep them away from strong heat.

Neodymium magnets begin to lose magnetic strength when exposed to temperatures above approximately 80°C (176°F). Don't leave your tools in a hot car, near a heat source, or in direct sunlight for extended periods.

Avoid strong electromagnetic fields.

While everyday electronics won't affect your magnets meaningfully, proximity to MRI machines, industrial electromagnets, or high-powered wireless charging pads over extended periods could affect polarity. Keep your fidget tools away from these.

Store separately when not in use.

Storing magnetic rings and sliders together or stacked can cause them to snap together forcefully — leading to surface scratches or chips over time. Store in a soft pouch or designated compartment.

Clean the magnet surfaces gently.

If dust or debris accumulates on magnet surfaces (which can affect how smoothly they interact), wipe with a dry cloth. For stubborn residue, a very lightly IPA-dampened cloth is safe. Never submerge magnetic items in any liquid.

What NOT to do:

  • Don't drop magnetic rings on hard surfaces — the neodymium magnets inside can crack
  • Don't expose to water — while the outer casing is metal, water can seep into the magnet cavity
  • Don't try to re-magnetize with household magnets — this is ineffective and risks demagnetizing polarity
